Get to Know the History of Greece at Heroes Ultra (and Win Free Tickets!)

Feb 10, 2016
When it comes to Greece, great long distance races are steeped in history. From the gruelling Spartathlon to the classic Athens Marathon, there is always a remarkable feat behind the country's biggest running challenges, and it could be no different with Heroes Ultra, the newest 154 km trail ultramarathon to be staged in Crete in May 2016 for the first time.

The Kreipe abduction

Based on one of the finest military operations of WWII, Heroes Ultra traces the escape route of the 1944 abduction of General Heinrich Kreipe, the commander of German occupation forces in Crete, by British SOE agents Major Patrick Leigh Fermor and Captain William Stanley Moss and members of the local resistance. Most recently revisited by Christopher McDougall, the best-selling author of Born to Run, in his latest book, Natural Born Heroes, the story sees an unlikely cast of heroes take on the full might of the German military command in Crete, pulling off the unthinkable: the near-bloodless kidnapping of a high ranking officer in time of war.

The course

Tackling the 154 km and 5,500 m elevation gain of the mountainous route from the start at the spectacular 17th century Vosakou Monastery, over the snow-covered slopes of Mt. Ida to the seaside finish at Peristeres beach will not be easy. Unlike the original mission of Fermor and Moss, runners will have no enemy patrols nor search parties after them and there will be no General to haul over the mountains. Ιnstead they will be expected to battle against the clock and cover the entire course in a mere 30 hours rather than the near-20 days it took the original abduction party to reach the evacuation beach.

The course, which has received ITRA accreditation, will award a maximum of 6 points to all finishers towards qualification for such events as the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), trail ultra running's most prestigious Alpine event.
