The last days of autumn are passing by quickly and it is time to prepare for winter running. Winter brings some challenges to running, but it does not mean that you need to stop running because of cold weather or snow. In this article we have listed some important things that you should keep in mind when you step out for a winter run.
Aside from the right clothing, it is important to consider some other factors, which will make running in the cold more comfortable. One of the most important things is to prepare your body for the cold weather. It is important to warm up in any kind of weather, but in the cold it is even more essential as the temperature will obviously not warm you up! Cold weather is tougher for the respiratory system and for the muscles, and it consumes more energy. An easy and light workout session before going out will do fine or if you are only planning to take a relaxing run then just remember to start a bit slower. This way your body has time to get used to the cold weather.
As was mentioned earlier, cold and dry air is heavier for the lungs. During physical exercise it can cause asthmatic symptoms such as coughing and wheezing. Therefore it is recommended to breathe through the nose while running or exercising outdoors. It warms up and moistens the air you are breathing in, this is gentler for the lungs. Another way of protecting your respiratory system is covering the lower part of your face for example with a tube scarf.
Runners shouldn’t forget that even in the cold the body consumes energy and transpires by sweating. It is important to keep hydrated, even though drinking water in the cold might not always feel so appealing.
Choosing the right route is also important. Black ice bothers many runners especially in the beginning of the winter and that is why it is often more comfortable to run on gravel or snow. You should also consider choosing a route with sufficient lighting along the way if you do not own a headlamp or something similar.
Now just take your winter running clothes out of the closet and go out to enjoy the brisk weather. In the next article we are going to tell you about suitable winter clothing, so stay tuned!
