You are organizing Skopje Marathon on the 10th of May 2015. Can you tell us where your event is located and how runners are able to travel there easily?
Skopje Marathon is arranged in the Macedonian capital. You can travel to Skopje with car, train, bus and by plain. For example our title sponsor Wizz Air offers inexpensive flights to Skopje, and when you register for the race you get 20 EUR discount for flights from or to Skopje Alexander The Great Airport.
Are there different distances in your event?
There are four races to choose from in the event: marathon, half marathon, 5 k race and our new race in 2015, marathon relay.
Tell us something about the history of your event. Why was it created in the first place and how has it changed over the years?
The first marathon race of international character named “Skopje Marathon” was held in Skopje in 1997. The next marathon was organized in 1998. Unfortunately, Skopje marathon was not organized again until 2007, when it was re-established. Skopje marathon is a member of AIMS since 2009. Over the years it has grown to be the best sports event in Macedonia and one of the best marathon events in the Balkan region. In 2014 our guest and promoter was Wilson Kipsang, in that period the world record holder in marathon.
Describe your route a bit. How’s the scenery? Is the route beginner friendly? Can runners expect PB’s?
The route of Skopje Marathon is very flat and friendly for new personal best records. Route of half marathon is one lap on the streets of the city, and marathon runners have one more lap on the same course.
How many runners do you expect to have in your event?
In 2015 we expect to have more than 7000 runners in all races.
What kind of weather conditions can runners prepare to face in your event?
It varies from year to year. In 2013 we had perfect conditions, with temperature around 16 degrees and with little rain. In 2014 it was hot weather with 23 degrees.
What else should runners do in the city after/before the race? Any suggestions to newcomers?
There are a lot of tourist attractions in the city of Skopje. Skopje is becoming a modern city. Home to about a quarter of the entire population of the country. Mother Teresa was born and lived in Skopje until she was 18. The original house no longer exists, but there is a beautiful and tranquil modern chapel and interpretive center on the site.
