Interview with Funchal Marathon

May 20, 2015

You are organizing the Funchal Marathon on the 31st of January 2016. Can you tell us where your event is located and how runners are able to travel there easily?

The event takes place in the city of Funchal, the capital of Madeira Island. There are direct flight connections from all major European cities to Funchal.

Are there different distances in your event?

Yes, we offer three distances: marathon (42,195 km), half marathon (21,097 km) and mini marathon (7 km).

Tell us something about the history of your event. Why was it created in the first place and how has it changed over the years?

Madeira Island, considered the Pearl of the Atlantic due to its climate and natural beauty, was lacking an event of this nature. Three years ago we organized a half marathon and due to the requests from participants we began organizing a marathon as well.

Describe your route a bit. How’s the scenery? Is the route beginner friendly? Can runners expect PB's?

The route is divided in two parts (circuits) with a transition phase. The majority of the course is flat and without major difficulty. The route, combined with the usual weather conditions, is ideal for achieving PB's.

How many runners do you expect to have in your event?

For the next edition, we expect more than 1.800 athletes.

What kind of weather conditions can runners prepare to face in your event?

The athletes can expect temperatures around 17ºC, without rain or wind. Ideal conditions for a marathon.

What else should runners do in the city after/before the race? Any suggestions to newcomers?

Madeira has a lot of interesting places to visit. After the race, you are welcome to experience our famous levada walks in the middle of the Laurel forest. Alternatively you can bathe and relax in the Atlantic sea, since the sea temperature at this time of the year is around 19ºC.

How would you describe your event to people who haven't yet participated in it? What makes your event unique?

Those who enjoy running long distances, have the opportunity to do so with comfortable temperatures and can look forward to spending an excellent couple of days in an exotic environment.

Anything else you want to tell about your event?

Experience running in Madeira and explore the Pearl of the Atlantic, also known as the Hawaii of Europe.
