Interview with Siberian International Marathon

Feb 20, 2015
You are organizing Siberian International Marathon on the 20th of September 2015. Can you tell us where your event is located and how runners are able to travel there easily?

The event takes place in Omsk, which is located in southwestern Siberia, Russia. Omsk is Russia’s second-largest city east of the Ural Mountains, and seventh largest nationally. There are multiple direct flights from Germany (Hannover, Düsseldorf, Berlin etc.). Another way of travelling is to take a connecting flight through Moscow (there are some daily flights).

Are there different distances in your event?

Yes, Siberian International Marathon has the classic maraton, and a 10 km race as competitive distances. In addition, there is a 6 km fun run.

Tell us something about the history of your event. Why was it created in the first place and how has it changed over the years?

The race has over 24 years of history. It started out as a way of attracting visitors to the Omsk region, as well as a way to promote healthy living and exercise to locals. Our event is included in the IAAF and AIMS calendars and it is also a holder of a Bronze Race Road label of IAAF.

How many runners do you expect to have in your event?

We expect around 16 000 runners to take part in our event.

What kind of weather conditions can runners prepare to face in your event?

The weather is mild, September weather is usually between +12 and +15 degrees.

What else runners should do in the city after/before the race? Any suggestions to newcomers?

We offer a city tour with a viewing of the course. It is also recommended to visit the Omsk Fortress, and the Achair Monastery. Those interested in literature and history should also visit the Dostoyevskiy museum. For an authentic experience, there are some Russian Banyas. A Banya is a steam room where people go to spend time and bathe, similar to the Finnish sauna.

Those staying in the region for a longer period can take a 2-day trip to the Siberian Taiga to experience unique and beautiful nature.

How would you describe your event to people who haven’t yet participated in it? What makes your event unique?

Taking part in the Siberian International Marathon is a great opportunity to visit an unknown part of the world, a place you might not visit otherwise, and to take part in a high-level international event.

Anything else you want to tell about your event?

We pay special attention to every foreign participant. We have competent guides who speak multiple different languages, as well as welcome ceremonies and friendship parties, fan groups along a course, Russian holiday celebrations, excursions… everything to make your trip unforgettable.
