The 36th edition of the NN Marathon Rotterdam will take place on Sunday April 10th. Around 30.000 participants are expected for the various running experiences of The Netherlands' biggest one-day sports event. The world's top athletes will be at the start on the bustling Coolsingel.
Every year the organizers provide a fast, traffic free, safe and running friendly course. The course in Rotterdam has already proven itself with fast times. After 3 world records (Carlos Lopes in 1985, Belayneh Densamo in 1988 and Tegla Loroupe in 1998) Felix Limo ran the fastest time ever on Dutch soil in 2004. He crossed the finish in a time of 2.06.14 (course record Rotterdam). In 2008 William Kipsang broke the course record in 2.05.49. Duncan Kibet broke this record in 2009 by crossing the finish in 2.04.27, the fastest time worldwide in 2009.
The start and finish are in front of the Town Hall on the Coolsingel. The course is considered to be the fastest course in the world based on the ten fastest times ever run in a marathon. The course is run completely on tarmac. The starting shot is traditionally fired by a cannon.
All care stands along the course provide sports drinks and water. After the finish, you will also be offered tea. There are aid stations every 5 km along the route. Every aid station has water and AA Drink Iso-Lemon. Every station is signposted 200 m and 100 m in advance by means of yellow signs on the right-hand side of the road. Water is distributed via the unique drinking system Smart Drinking.
Before the start and after the event you have access to the changing facilities on presentation of your bib number. These locations are still to be announced. We advise you to arrive at the start in your running clothes. There are areas available near the start and the finish where you can leave personal belongings. Once these locations are known, they will be announced on the event website immediately. Clothing left at the start is not kept and can therefore not be claimed as lost property.
To get into the mood, as a warming-up for Sunday’s marathon, you can also take part in the AD Mini Marathon Rotterdam (4.2 km) on Saturday for a reduced charge of €10. This event also starts and finishes on Coolsingel.

My first marathon
Rotterdam Marathon 2013 was my first ever marathon. It was very well organized and the route was very flat so it was ideal for a fast time. My time was 3:12:07 which is really good for a first marathon.
The city is nice and modern but a bit plain. Not many historical buildings but still worth the visit.
I recommend this event to runners of all levels!
